One day on the set of My Name is Earl, Ethan Suplee mentioned that he was to be interviewed for Anthem. And either I'd asked if I could shoot it, or he'd asked me if I would. Regardless, I made some 8x10 Polaroids of him on set during breaks from filming. The piece ran and seemed to turn out pretty well. This then created a relationship with the magazine's founder and editor, Dustin Beatty. I went on to photograph for a few more issues, with Dustin allowing me to choose some subjects, which included actress Beth Riesgraf, the band Midlake, artist Mercedes Helnwein, and actor Giovanni Ribisi. I also had the honor of photographing Dennis Hopper, Julius Shulman, David Gordon Green, and James McAvoy. Although I no longer make portraits or do any commercial or staged photography, I was happy to have been a part of the magazine during its run, and to have photographed and collaborated with so many great people. And it was in Anthem that some of my early large format Polaroids were first seen, in a piece titled Instant America.
